Online Poker Bots are Getting Better

It took several years from the advent of online poker for the first automated playing software programs to appear (affectionately known as “poker bots”). They weren’t very good. Several more years went by without much progress. The only poker bot programs which have been commercially available until recently depended upon third party software programs to generate the signals which tell it what action to take. These third party brains are sorely lacking in necessary variables for programming a solid poker game.

The most popular third party brain is called “Online Poker Inspector.” It’s a neat little program but does not gather enough information from the poker table to mimic a good player. It doesn’t track the number of opponents at the table, number of opponent’s still in the hand, the player’s current position, or previous round betting action. Without these elements you can only make a decision based on the strength of your hand and whether or not the pot has been bet (or raised) on the current betting round. Still, OPI-based bots are popular at the lowest-stakes games in many poker rooms.

Individual programmers have been making their own poker bots for years. How good these are nobody really knows. There are two popular platforms for building them on, known as “Open Holdem” (an open-source platform) and “Win Holdem.” To create a good poker bot from these platforms takes many months of programming work and these bots can only play Limit Holdem. However there is a thriving community of these guys on the Open Holdem forum.

But the newcomer on the scene is stealing all the action these days, and rightly so. A company known as Shanky Technologies now sells a No Limit Holdem bot that is catching fire among online poker players. This product does gather all the necessary elements of the game needed for making expert-level decisions in both tournaments and cash games, on every betting round. It comes pre-loaded with a good profile for playing cash games, but the user can completely customize all of it’s actions with a simple programming language (that pretty much anyone can learn relatively quickly).

This has resulted in a very active community of poker botters who create and trade profiles for different game environments. Hanging out in the forum with these guys can get you all worked up. Somebody is always developing some new approach and players regularly report high-money finishes in large-field tournaments using this pokerbot.

The poker rooms all still say that poker bots are not allowed, but only Poker Stars does anything about it. The rest of them, controlling a much smaller market share, tolerate them in practice. Perhaps this is because they are beginning to account for a good chunk of revenue - as they just sit there playing and paying rake all day long. The future of online poker may very well involve the mass usage of pokerbot software.

How much better can the bots get? Time will tell.
